The Menu with Avocado Fries on it

ROCKENWAGNER 3 SQUARE CAFE - Abbot Kinney, Venice - http://www.rockenwagner.com/cafe.html

3 Square Cafe is a hip, artsy feeling small cafe and bakery that cooks up an eclectic menu whether it's Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner.  At Breakfast they do fun dishes like Grilled Weisswurst with 2 eggs, Bavarian sweet mustand and bratkartoffeln and a pretzel roll or a crispy Poached egg with creamed spinach, sautéed spinach and tomato confit.  I also think their German apple pancake with creme fraiche sounds delicious.   At lunch they do an interesting 3 sandwich sampler, which lets you choose 3 mini sandwiches from a selection of;  Bavarian meat loaf, shrimp grilled cheese, Italian sausage marinara and provolone, curried chicken salad, mini pretzel burger or eggplant caponata with burrata.  We ordered off the dinner menu...

Starting with a must have, Avocado Fries.  Most people flinch when I mention avocado fries, they can't even imagine what that means.  To me it means genius.  Avocado fries are revolutionizing fries like plastic surgery revolutionized the woman’s breasts. Avocado fries are sliced avocados that are battered, then fried and then seasoned with sea salt.  The outside it crisp and crunchy and the inside is a soft avocado.  They also serve it with lemon, which should definitely be squirted across the wedges, and a spicy fire roasted salsa.  All these flavors blend together beautifully.

Next came the Caponata with cherry tomatoes, burrata and basil.  When this dish came out I was confused the burrata cheese was so soft, fluffy and gooey that it almost looked like scrambled egg whites.  If you don't know Caponata is an Italian eggplant dish that consists of chopped eggplant, tomatoes, onions, capers and sometimes nuts, anchovies and olives.  They served it with nice piece of sourdough toast, which was a perfect palate to pile the caponate, tomatoes, delicious burrata cheese and basil on top of.  I've never had Caponata before but I will have it again.  It was delicious.

When it came to our main courses I had the Trout with Sautéed Curry Vegetables and grapefruit dressing.  I don't know who thinks to combine Trout, curry and grapefruit together but well done.  It really does work well and I'm even thinking more people should try and do it.  I would think that this dish could also turn out bad very fast if one doesn't know what they are doing so blend these flavors with caution.  This dish was light, felt healthy and was extremely tasty.  There were so many delicious flavors going on a non-fish enthusiast like myself was so distracted that I really enjoyed the trout.

My friend ordered the Pretzel Burger, it appeared to be very juicy and the pretzel bun looked wonderful and fluffy. I didn't try it cause I'm trying my hardest to stay away from Red Meat for a little while letting my heart and arteries have a break, but she really enjoyed it.

3 Square Cafe doesn't have liquor, but they have mimosas, bellini and their All City Hefeweizen is a steal at only $8 bucks for a huge 22 ounce bottle.
